NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS
The books produced by Blue Room Publishing typically dissipate genre borders and transcend branding as long as it feeds the niche that calls for it. What does that mean? That's basically an artsy, pretentious way of saying we'll publishing anything, but not everything. If we had to label our genre, we'd call it "left-of-center" fiction. We like stories that focus on making the usual appear unusual and vice-versa. If you understand that statement and have a manuscript that fits the description, we may be interested in publishing it!
Disclaimer
Before submitting, keep in mind the following: One of the hardest things about the publishing biz (aside from actually getting published, of course) is the marketing involved. There are tons of genres and styles out there, but the primary reading audience fits into a very tiny group (married, middle-aged women, I'm looking right at ya). Because of this, there are literally thousands of great books being published that often do not find any readership. To exacerbate the problem, there are even more amazing manuscripts that never get published because of the great financial risk involved in backing a book that may not have a profitable niche to exploit.
While Blue Room Publishing isn't big enough to solve this problem, we're still trying to make our own impact by providing an outlet for new and emerging writers to show off their talents. However, such as the case with all publishers of every shape and size (yes, even the big ones), we feel the best person to market a book is the person who wrote it. While Blue Room does it's best to promote all its writers, the true measure of a book's success is determined by the author's ability to promote his or her work.
What We're Looking for
We're currently interested in works from any and all genres to be considered for publication, however, keep in mind that we do lean heavily towards more off-beat, character-driven works of fiction. As a publisher of left-of-center fiction, the "off-beat" part is pretty important. We'll be more than happy to take a look at stories that stretch into genre's such as science fiction and mystery; however, keep in mind that if they don't have original, interesting and authentic characters and/or situations and focus too much on the "staples" of a particular genre (i.e. a SF story that focuses more on hi-tech gadgetry than the characters using said gadgetry), then we may lose interest.
We accept multiple and simultaneous submissions, however, please contact us if your submission has been picked up elsewhere.
Please submit your work according to the guidelines assigned to each genre. Note: All unsolicited manuscripts will be destroyed unread. All submissions can be sent to editor@blueroompublishing.com. We prefer all initial submissions to be made electronically as an attachment. If subsequent submissions follow, we may require you to send us hard copies at your own expense.
Fiction:
Send a query letter via email with a short description of your manuscript along with some information about yourself. Also, send an attachment of the first two chapters of your manuscript (or approximately the first 20 to 40 pages of the document). For short story collections, send two to four stories that best represent the collection.
Poetry:
While we do publish poetry collections, we only publish collections that exceed a certain length. Therefore, if you do not have a poetry collection that would exceed 50 printed pages, please consider publishing a chapbook elsewhere or consider submitting to one of our upcoming anthologies. If you do have enough work to be presented in this format, or if you are combining poems with another format (i.e. short stories) send 10 to 15 poems and a plan for not only the theme of the collection (if one applies) but also what else you'd like to include. We will not consider art at this time.
